Best Time of Day to Work Out

Finding time to exercise can be challenging, and the most important thing is to squeeze in any amount of it whenever you can. But if you want to optimize your workout to get the widest range of benefits, you might want to try exercising in the morning. Here’s what the science says about the best time of day to exercise.

Morning Workouts have an Edge

Working out in the morning especially on an empty stomach is the best way to burn stored fat, making it ideal for weight loss. That’s largely because the body’s hormonal composition in the morning is set up to support that goal. A morning sweat may also lead to better mental health and productivity throughout the day, since exercise is great for reducing stress.

Benefits of Working Out in Morning

  • Better Mood

  • Fewer Distraction

  • Better mood and better Focus

  • Appetite Control

  • Blood Pressure Management

  • Blood Glucose Control

With time and patience, you can start your own morning workout routine. Here’s how to make it happen:

  • Do exercise you enjoy. Try new exercises and see what you like most. When you truly enjoy a workout, it’ll be easier to get out of bed

  • Meet a workout buddy. Making plans with a friend is a great way to hold yourself accountable.

  • Make breakfast in advance. Prepare an energizing pre-workout meal the night before.

  • Prepare your workout gear. Before going to bed, set out your gym clothes, sneakers, and other workout necessities.

  • Gradually adjust your workout time. Instead of jumping into a 6 a.m. workout, slowly move your workout time earlier and earlier.

  • Sleep well. A good night’s rest is essential for waking up early. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep.

Afternoon workouts are almost as good

Morning workouts are ideal for burning fat and losing weight, but afternoon workouts may give your performance a boost, since you’ll have eaten a meal or two by the time you get going.

In the afternoon and evening, your reaction time is at its quickest. Between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., your body temperature is at its highest. This may mean you’ll be exercising during the window of time your body is most ready, potentially making it the most effective time of day to work out.
